Help Me Grow Provider Outreach is one of the main components of Help Me Grow. In an effort to support early detection and intervention, Help Me Grow staff conduct outreach efforts through office-based education and training. The purpose is to enhance knowledge and motivate physicians and other pediatric staff to: 1) conduct developmental surveillance and screening of children from birth to age five; 2) use the Support for Families’ warm-line services; and 3) systematize developmental surveillance and screening and the use of Help Me Grow in San Francisco practices.
Below are the steps for your clinic to be part of the Help Me Grow community.
- General meeting with pediatric clinic staff– This meeting will be a brief overview of how Support for Families and Help Me Grow work together in San Francisco. Site staff will receive information about Support for Families’ services, Help Me Grow tools, and the referral process. (~30 minutes)
- First Training– In adopting the developmental screening recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Bright Futures for pediatric preventive health care, Help Me Grow staff offers training on the Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ) and the Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers, Revised (MCHAT/R). Information on how the tools were developed, how to use them in the clinical setting, and tips will be included. (~1.5 hours)
- Second Training– The second training will occur 2-4 weeks after the first training. Staff will be trained on referral pathways, quality assurance and data collection. (~30 minutes-1 hour)
- Site Visits- The pediatric site will receive a quarterly site visit to help address any questions or concerns from the site staff. Screening data will be collected at the time. Data will include age of child at screening, ethnicity of child, developmental screening tool used, date of screening, zip code where family resides, and screening summary points. The pediatric site can also contact the Help Me Grow team at any point before the site visit for any training and technical support needed through firstname.lastname@example.org.
